Tornadoes left with void Friday

The nonleague football game scheduled between Hoover High and Sotomayor on Friday has been cancelled, Hoover athletic director Jack Van Patten said. The contest was set for 7 p.m. at Glendale High’s Moyse Field.

Van Patten said the game was called off because Sotomayor will observe a four-day Labor Day weekend. Sotomayor is in the L.A. Unified School District.

The game will not be made up, Van Patten said.

Hoover began its season Friday with a 25-12 loss at Campbell Hall.

Heat leads to postponement of games

Several local contests were cancelled Tuesday because of excessive heat.

A Pacific League girls’ golf match at Santa Anita Golf Course in Arcadia was postponed, in addition to nonleague girls’ tennis matches between Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Chaminade and Glendale and Mayfield.

Makeup dates for each event haven’t been finalized.

Davis responds with stout effort

Perhaps sensing the need for a strong performance, Glendale High alumnus Michael Davis turned in arguably his best effort of the preseason Saturday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Chargers rookie defensive back finished with four tackles, three solo, in his team’s 21-19 victory over the crosstown rival Los Angeles Rams at the Coliseum.

The victory was the first for the Chargers this preseason, with the defense playing well for the second straight weekend.

Davis saw extensive action and upped his preseason stat total to 10 tackles, which ties him with Korey Toomer and Chris McCain for sixth on the team.

Davis will see even more action in the Chargers’ preseason finale Thursday as Los Angeles travels to take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said in a press conference Monday that he plans on sitting all 21 starters, meaning more time for Davis and others trying to make the team.

The goal for Davis is to make the cut from the Chargers’ current 90-man roster to 53. The NFL mandates that teams must finalize their rosters by Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bergman called up by Seattle

Former St. Francis High baseball player Christian Bergman was called up by the Seattle Mariners from the Tacoma Rainiers on Monday. It will mark the third time this season Bergman, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year, has been summoned by Seattle.

He pitched Monday against the Baltimore Orioles. Bergman allowed one run and five hits in two innings.

Bergman, a right-hander, is 4-4 with a 4.89 earned-run average in 12 appearances (eight starts) with Seattle. In 53 1/3 innings, Bergman has struck out 33 and walked 14.

Sarkissian falls in U.S. Open qualifier

Alex Sarkissian, a former Glendale Community College men’s tennis player, lost Monday in a first-round qualifying match of the U.S. Open.

Reilly Opelka of the United States defeated Sarkissian, 7-6(7-5), 3-6, 7-6(7-2).

Estrada gets back on winning track

Former Glendale Community College and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada earned his second win in four starts Saturday in a 10-9 victory against the Minnesota Twins.

Estrada, a right-handed starter, kept the Twins in check long enough for the Blue Jays to break through with six runs in the fifth inning. Estrada went six innings, giving up three runs on with five hits while striking out five.

“Obviously, the offense showed up today and scored a bunch of runs,” Estrada told MLB.com. “We played a good game today. It almost fell apart, but I’m glad we pulled it off.”

In 27 starts, Estrada has a 6-8 record with a 5.04 earned-run average over 151 2/3 innings. He has struck out 152 and walked 62.

Huh misses cut at Northern Trust

Crescenta Valley High graduate John Huh didn’t make the cut at the Northern Trust Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, N.Y.

Huh opened Thursday with a one-under-par 69 before carding a 79 on Friday to finish at 149. The cut was 142.

Dustin Johnson defeated Jordan Spieth in a playoff to win the tournament.
