Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club: Wrong ticket, dramatic result

Share

The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, in its 75th year, meets Tuesdays at the Elk’s Lodge. The following are odds and ends from the seventh meeting of the year.

SCHILLING GETS QUITE A SURPRISE

It’s been a perfect season on the field thus far for Crescenta Valley coach Paul Schilling and the Falcons. Crescenta Valley is 7-0, 4-0 in the Pacific League entering Friday’s key showdown for first place with Burbank (5-2, 4-0) at Moyse Field.

Schilling , whose team is ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division VI behind Bishop Diego, encountered shock off the field Saturday. He and his family had tickets for the National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.

The Schillings arrived tickets in hand at Dodger Stadium for the first game of the series on Saturday. Or so they thought.

When they went to present the tickets at the turnstile, the tickets weren’t accepted. Schilling found out that he had tickets for the second game, which was to be played Sunday.

“We thought we had tickets for the first game and we didn’t,” Schilling said. “So, then we had to find a way to go against the traffic coming into the [parking lot]. It was pretty unreal.

“At least we knew we had tickets for the second game and it turned out to be quite an amazing game.”

The Dodgers got a three-run, walk-off home run from Justin Turner off John Lackey with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up a 4-1 win in the second game.

RIVALRY GAINS MORE TRACTION

St. Francis and La Salle are separated by less than 10 miles. Over the last few seasons, the Golden Knights and Lancers have not only battled on the field, but also off the field in their quest to bring in student-athletes.

St. Francis earned a 49-16 Angelus League road victory against La Salle on Friday to improve to 7-0, 2-0. The Golden Knights are ranked fifth in CIF Southern Section Division III.

“When we play La Salle, it’s like a neighborhood game,” said St. Francis assistant Tony Zarrillo, who filled in for coach Jim Bonds at Tuesday’s meeting. “When the kids are coming up through middle school and junior high, most of them are considering going to St. Francis or La Salle.

“Our games have been reasonably close the last few games. We were up, 28-16, and then we scored three touchdowns to put the game our of reach.”

St. Francis standout running back Elijah Washington finished with five touchdowns. He rushed for 226 yards in 21 carries.

NITROS SEEKING TO REGROUP

It’s been a difficult stretch for Glendale. The Nitros have lost four straight games — all in the Pacific League — to drop to 2-5, 0-4.

Glendale third-year coach George Maiale hasn’t given up in trying to continue building the team while looking toward the future.

“We’ve got a lot of young players and they have been brought up to the varsity level,” said Maiale, whose team suffered a 55-0 road loss against Muir on Friday. “We’ve had some players who’ve made an impact.”

Muir jumped out to a 42-0 lead in the first quarter. However, there were some bright spots for Glendale, which will meet visiting Arcadia in a league contest at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“We liked the play of [receiver] Trent Lousararian,” Maiale said. “[Linebacker] Chris Ibarra continues to get better playing a new position. [Quarterback] Van Haslett also continues to improve.”
