BASEBALL IOTEC captured the Crescenta Sports Assn. Pinto Championship with a 1-0 victory Saturday. The team finished 19-2-1 and was coached by Dana Ruf, Troy Cancelosi and Eric Hagenow.
The team consists of Michael Ruf, Matthew Larsen, Declan Beatty, Jay Dickinson, Edan Bash, Cody Cancelosi, Jackson Ziegenfuss, Jordan Neven, Manny Ortiz, Chase Smith and Nicholas Lopes, Dana Ruf, Eric Hagenow and Troy Cancelosi.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Glendale eighth-grade Panthers team grabbed a silver medal and a spot in the 2010 California State Games with a second-place finish in the California State Games Regional Qualifying Tournament in Moreno Valley, which was held June 5-6.
The Panthers will next compete in the California State Games, which will be held July 9-11 in San Diego.
In their first game, the Panthers took on the Banning All-Stars with Glendale earning a 40-39 overtime win. Glendale trailed by eight points with three minutes left when Daniel Khodaverdi made a free throw to begin a Panther eight-point run. Steve Arakelyan hit a three-point shot and Isaiah Everett put in two before a driving lay-up by Richard Elmoyan tied the game at 35-35 and sent the contest into an extra session. Glendale outscored Banning, 5-4, in the extra session.
Arakelyan finished with 12 points and two steals, Khodaverdi had eight points and seven rebounds, Elmoyan finished with eight points and four assists, Alex Chirishyan had seven points and six rebounds, Everett scored three points and Arno Arutyunyan added two for Glendale.
Glendale then rallied to record a 39-34 victory against the Riverside Hawks. Glendale trailed by four with less than two minutes remaining when Elmoyan sliced through the defense to bring the score to within two and Arakelyan hit two free throws to tie it at 34.
Elmoyan finished with 16 points, three steals and two assists, Arakelyan had 14 points and three steals, Everett scored four points, Chirishyan scored three and Arutyunyan added two for Glendale, which clinched a spot in the championship game and an appearance in the State Games.
In the championship game, the Panthers committed 23 turnovers en route to a 35-25 loss to the Corona Lakers. Artur Keshishyan had seven points for the Panthers, who got seven from Arakelyan.
“With the two big games yesterday, we had earned a state games spot and it would have been nice to wrap it all up, but we weren’t focused enough for the final game,” Glendale Coach Mike Hailey said in a statement. “Now we get ready for the California State Games starting July 9 and I think we have a legitimate chance to win a gold medal there.”
