Panich grabs another medal
GLENDALE — Narrow courses apparently work in Tammy Panich’s favor, even when battling a cold.
Despite being under the weather the last several days and fighting not-so-favorable weather conditions Monday afternoon during a Western State Conference match at Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Canyon Country, the Glendale Community College women’s golfer managed another solid round.
Playing on a saturated course, Panich carded a six-over-par 78 to share low-medalist honors with Dee Ray of Bakersfield.
Panich, who broke her own school record with a two-under-par 71 that helped the Vaqueros tie for first in a conference match at Marshall Canyon Golf Course in La Verne on Oct. 11, didn’t let her cold affect while taking to the course in the Santa Clarita Valley and finishing in first for the second straight match.
“I like the narrower courses because I’m more of a straight hitter,” said Panich, a former All-Area member and Glendale High graduate, who finished with two birdies. “I hit well off the tee [Monday], and, for the most part, I was able to keep the ball on the fairways.
“The weather didn’t really bother me because I’ve played and practiced in all kinds of weather. There was a little drizzle and the greens were a little soft.”
Despite Panich’s second consecutive solid round, the Vaqueros finished fifth in the five-team event because they only fielded three players. Imelda Treto had an 87 for the Vaqueros, who also received a 97 from Diana Hernandez. Glendale competed without Louise Wright, who missed the match because of a previous engagement.
Glendale first-year Coach Greg Osbourne said Panich persevered and kept herself in the running for the conference’s individual championship.
“She proved once again that she’s the best player in our conference,” Osbourne said. “For her to be able to come out on top again is a positive for her and our program and she’s still on that upward swing.”
College of the Canyons finished first with a 323, followed by Bakersfield (335), Santa Barbara (349), Citrus (505) and Glendale.
