St. Francis wins league opener in five
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
St. Francis 3, Harvard-Westlake 2: The Golden Knights continued their terrific start with a dramatic 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12 win in their Mission League opener at home.
Wesley Coffey led the Golden Knights with 24 kills.
“He was a monster tonight,” said St. Francis Coach Mark Frazee, whose team is now 4-0.
Chris Thompson had 53 assists, while Nick De Cesare added 15 kills and Charles McCarthy had 11.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hoover 18, Pasadena 0: The Tornadoes improved to 2-1 overall and in the Pacific League with Tuesday afternoon’s home victory.
Burbank 12, Crescenta Valley 6: Singles player Chris Kim had two set wins for the Falcons, who dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Pacific League with Tuesday’s road loss.
BASEBALL
Flintridge Prep 4, San Gabriel 2: Kyle McDonald allowed two earned runs on two hits over five innings to pick up the win for the Rebels (2-0) and also collected two of the team’s three hits in a Duarte Tournament contest on Tuesday.
Clayton Weirick tossed one inning for the save, striking out two.
St. Francis 3, Camarillo 1: Ryan Garcia went five innings and allowed one run on four hits to get the win for the Golden Knights (2-1) and also hit a solo home run in an Easton Tournament game on Tuesday.
Danny Monarrez earned the save and Jeff Garabaglia had an RBI double for St. Francis.
Crescenta Valley 7, Charter Oak 0: Elliot Surrey gave up just one hit in five innings to earn the win for the Falcons (1-1) at the Glendora Tournament on Tuesday.
Kyle Pomeroy keyed a four-run first inning for the Falcons with a home run. Troy Mulcahey had a double and a walk and Troy Prasertsit was two for two with two doubles.
Pomeroy and Cole Currie pitched scoreless innings of relief.
SOFTBALL
Mayfield 7, Holy Family 2: The Gaels dropped their nonleague contest on Tuesday afternoon at Brookside Park.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 11, Westridge 8: Sacred Heart improved to 2-0 with its nonleague victory on Monday afternoon, as Sumner Hanula had five runs batted in.
Paige Conti also had two RBI and made a collection of standout plays at shortstop.
BOYS’ GOLF
Harvard-Westlake 205, St. Francis 213: The Golden Knights fell against their Mission League foe on Tuesday at par-36 Brookside No. 1.
Richie Maloof and Vince De Pinto each shot 38s, while Michael Finney carded a 43.
Webb 217, Pasadena Poly 236, Flintridge Prep 252: The Rebels fell to 0-6 and 0-2 in the Prep League during a league tri-match on Tuesday afternoon at Brookside No. 1.
Justin Farshidi shot a six-over-par 42, while Richard Lo checked in with a 49 and Peter Chodas had a 52.
La Cañada 198, Crescenta Valley 219: The Falcons (2-1) dropped their nonleague match on Tuesday at par-35 Brookside No. 2.
Paul Park led Crescenta Valley with a 41, Adrian Chia fired a 43 and Nick Blackburn shot a 44. The Falcons other scores included a 45 for Daniel Namkung and a 46 for John Lee.
GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 70, Louisville 52: The Tologs’ Stephanie Vargas set a school record by clocking 26.44 in the 200-meter race on Monday in a Mission League meet at Crespi High.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Ventura College 7, Glendale Community College 2: The Vaqueros got two singles wins, with No. 3 Sindi Concebida prevailing, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and No. 4 Phoebe Minette winning, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
GCC is now 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference.
