Falcons’ Surrey tosses no-hitter

BASEBALL

Crescenta Valley 2, 2, Chula Vista Mater Dei 0, 3: On the strength of an Elliott Surrey no-hitter, the Falcons won their 14th straight game of the season before losing for only the second time in the season during Saturday’s doubleheader.

Crescenta Valley (14-2) defeated Mater Dei, 2-0, in its first game on Saturday, as Surrey twirled a no-no, striking out 10 batters in the process.

Tyler Pollack drove in both runs on a fourth-inning single, scoring Troy Mulcahey and Kyle Murray.

CV lost the second game of the doubleheader, 3-2.

Cam Silva had a solo home run in the game.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Arcadia Invitational: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy got a fifth-place finish in the finals of the 4x400-meter relay from Stephanie Vargas, Daelyn Moon, Drew Washington and Noelle Niederhaus in 4 minutes .58 seconds on Saturday at Arcadia High.

Vargas also placed second in the 400 with a time of 56.89 after qualifying for the finals with a mark of 58.10.

Niederhaus, Moon, Washington and Vargas also placed sixth in their heat of the 4x100 relay in 50.61.

Crescenta Valley’s Cali King, Tiernan Hebron, Diane Lombardi and Anneke Kakebeen placed 12th in the Women’s Distance Medley in 12:46.68.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Arcadia Invitational: Andrew Roide of Crescenta Valley placed eight in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 6 inches on Saturday at Arcadia High.

James Knowles of St. Francis placed fourth in his heat of the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.14 seconds.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 8, West L.A. 7: Sako Chapjian scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Vaqueros to a Western State Conference win at Stengel File don Saturday.

John Schwer tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to score Adam Ochart, setting up Chapjian’s winning run.

Erik Suarez went one for one with three walks and scored four times and Michael Noteware pitched four inning of relief to get the win for Glendale (18-11, 9-7 in conference).

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Mount San Antonio College Relays: Crescenta Valley graduate Neil Jones won the 1,500-meter race on Saturday at Mt. SAC in a personal-record 3 minutes 54.09 seconds and finished fifth in the 800 in 1:55.62.

Ricky Avila finished second for the Vaqueros in the steeplechase in a personal-record 9:28.68, while Erick Lopez was fifth in the same race in 10:02.50.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Mount San Antonio College Relays: Alyssa Selve finished second in the 1,500 meters on Saturday at Mt. SAC in 4 minutes 42.02 seconds, a personal record, and fifth in the 200 in a personal-record 2:20.34.

Karen Rosas was third in the 1,500 in 4:43.69 and Carissa Porter was fourth in the 100 in 12.26.

Glendale also got fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the steeplechase from Catlin Kelly (11:38.95) and Diana Sanchez (11:39.90), respectively.
