FIRST ROUND

Flintridge Prep 12, Dos Pueblos 6: Balance, in the form of six singles and six doubles victories, carried the Rebels to a first-round CIF Southern Section Division II playoff victory Thursday.

Lauren Bateman, Dos Pueblos’ No. 1 singles player, swept, but it wasn’t enough.

“I don’t believe we’ll run into a No. 1 player again like that,” Flintridge Prep Coach Ron Catano said of Bateman. “She was just untouchable. [Going forward] we’re just going to weight heavily on our singles and hopefully our doubles can just finish the load.”

Prep’s No. 1 singles Andrea Kevakian won two sets, 6-0, 6-0, Jenise Vargas went 6-0, 6-0 out of the No. 2 slot and Roya Gheissari won two sets, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Prep was led by the teams of Kira Lee and Miah Webb (6-0, 6-0, 7-5) and Abby Letts and Young In-Kim (6-0, 6-1, 6-2).

Crescenta Valley 13, La Cañada 5: La Cañada Coach Will Moravec knew his team got a bad draw when he saw the Spartans would be facing the Falcons in the second round.

Crescenta Valley proved his worst fears in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs, defeating La Cañada at CV Thursday while rotating in the entire roster.

“I was hoping for a wild-card match because I thought we could win that,” said Moravec, whose team had lost to the Falcons, 15-3, on Oct. 26. “It’s rough having to play [CV], after they’d just beat us.”

Emily Borkowski (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), Karen Ataian (6-1, 6-0, 6-3) and the doubles team of Jackie Dilanchian and Viktoriya Shumakova (6-1, 6-3, 6-1) swept their competition Thursday, just like they did on Oct. 26.

Linnea Frazier and Alison Chang, La Cañada’s top doubles team, were the only Spartans to win more than one set, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Each of the Spartans’ singles players, Sawa Keymuelen (6-1), Sydney Fischel (6-0) and Sharon Kim (6-1), picked up a win against Crescenta Valley’s No. 3 singles, as three different Falcons were shuffled into that slot.
