Vaqueros turn back Cougars

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 1, College of the Canyons 0: Cameron Gardner singled home Jose Marquez in the bottom of the eighth to give the Vaqueros a Western State Conference South Division victory Thursday. Glendale college pitcher Cory Popham allowed five hits and struck out three in eight innings to get the victory. Kirk Edson picked up the save to help the Vaqueros improve to 18-7, 9-3 in the division.

Matt McCallister, Chris Stroh and Ruben Padilla played well defensively for the Vaqueros.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College 7, L.A. Mission College 6 (10 innings): The visiting Vaqueros won in the 10th inning on an error in a Western State Conference Blue Division contest at El Cariso Park. Glendale (19-8, 5-1 in the division) finished with 15 hits, including a two-run home run by Jennifer Nguyen in the first. Glendale starting pitcher Brandy Morin (14-7) went the distance.

MEN’S TENNIS

Irvine Valley College 6, Glendale Community College 3: The host Vaqueros (5-12) fell Thursday in a nonconference match. Grayson Frazier won his singles set, 6-1, 6-1, for the Vaqueros. Frazier then teamed with Trevor Campbell for an 8-4 doubles win. Rick Ivynian and Eric Khanlarian netted a 9-7 doubles victory for Glendale.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale 93, Burroughs 42: The host Nitros won 13 events Thursday in a Pacific League dual meet. Bobby Casabury, Tristan Pacba and Carlos Navarro each won two events for Glendale (2-3 in league). Casabury won the long jump in 18 feet 4 inches and the triple jump (39-8 1/2). Pacba won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.2 seconds and the 300 hurdles (43.2). Navarro won the 200 in 23.7 and the 400 in 54.8.

Crescenta Valley 111, Muir 25: Host Crescenta Valley received two first-place performances apiece from Justin Springfield, Josh Straschewski and Tyler Bradshaw on Thursday in a Pacific League dual meet. Springfield won the 200-meter race in 23 seconds and the long jump in 18 feet 3 inches. Straschewski took the 110 hurdles (15.3) and the 300 hurdles (40.6). Bradshaw won the triple jump (36-9) and the pole vault (11-3).

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale 91, Burroughs 45: Glendale won 14 events Thursday in a Pacific League home dual meet. The Nitros (4-1 in league) got three first-place finishes from Sophia Amodia in the 400-meter event (59.7 seconds), the 100 hurdles (15.4) and the 300 hurdles (47.1). Kenya Gaskin of Glendale won the 200 (27.7) and 100 (13.0). The Nitros also got a pair of first-places efforts from Leana Setian in the 1,600 (5 minutes 21 seconds) and the 3,200 (time not available). Marquita Lopez-Englelman won the discus (81-2) and shot put (26-0).

Crescenta Valley 116, Muir 14: Cayleigh Carrillo and Claudia Sepulveda each won two events Thursday for the host falcons in a Pacific League dual meet. Carrillo took the 100-meter dash in 12.4 and the 200 in 25.2. Sepulveda captured the 100 hurdles (16.5) and the 300 hurdles (49.4).

SOFTBALL

Hoover 5, Pasadena 4: The Tornadoes improved to 5-4 and 2-1 in league with a close win over the Bulldogs in Thursday’s Pacific League contest.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Crescenta Valley 9, Burbank 9 (Crescenta Valley wins, 79-70): Host Crescenta Valley won for the fifth time in its last six matches Thursday in a Pacific League contest. Crescenta Valley (6-7, 3-4 in league) received a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory from Tim Chong and Patrick Meserkhani. Crescenta Valley, which won its third match in as many days, got a 6-2, 6-1 singles win from Aren Abrahamian.

St. Francis 17, Crespi 1: John Kazanjian of visiting St. Francis swept his three sets without losing a game Thursday in a Mission League match at Braemar Country Club. St. Francis (5-5, 3-2 in league) also got a 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 win in singles from Alex Kevakian.

BASEBALL

Corona 12-7, St. Francis 3-2: The host Golden Knights (5-8) were swept in a nonleague doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Field on Wednesday. Jeff Garavaglia hit a home run in the first game for St. Francis.
