CV High grad John Huh set for PGA Championship
As a rookie on the PGA Tour, the learning curve continues for John Huh.
Huh, a 2008 Crescenta Valley High graduate, participated in his first championship — the British Open — in July. He didn’t make the cut, finishing tied for 126th.
That hasn’t slowed Huh from trying to improve his game and pushing forward, as he will get another crack at a major when he tees off a 6 p.m. PDT Thursday in the 94th rendition of the PGA championship at Kiawah Island Resort Ocean Course in Kiawah, S.C.
“The British Open was something that was different in that it was just my second time playing on a link course, but it was a fun experience and I learned from it,” said Huh, who spent 2011 going through qualifying school before earning his PGA card in December in Palm Springs. “It was my first trip overseas [on the tour], and there’s stuff that I can take from that and apply it [to the PGA championship].
“It’s a major, but I have to go in and treat it as a [regular] golf tournament.”
Huh, 22, will be paired with Mike Small and Brian Davis at the start of the four-day event that will wrap up Sunday. Entering today’s competition, Huh has won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico in February and registered three top-six finishes. Huh punched his ticket into the PGA Championship by virtue of winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
“It’s been fun practicing for the PGA Championship,” said Huh, who helped Crescenta Valley win a pair of Pacific League championships in 2006 and 2007. “Things have been a little slow for me after a great start to the season.
“This course can change in an hour with the winds, and the greens have been rolling real nice [during the practice rounds]. I have to go out there and make my putts. If I can do that, then I should be fine.”
Huh will tee off in the second round at 11:10 a.m. PDT Friday on the par 72 course that covers 7,676 yards.
Keegan Bradley won the championship last year at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.
