SPORTS ROUNDUP: First-place Glendale Community College baseball wins marathon

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 9, Citrus College 8 (16 innings): The visiting Vaqueros won their fifth straight game and their second extra-inning win in the last three games, as Julian Jarrard drove in the game-winning run on one of his four hits. .

GCC is now 10-2 and remains in first place in the Western State Conference South Division and is 15-5 overall.

Sergio Plascencia had three hits and three runs, including the game-winner on Jarrard’s RBI. Justin Jones also had three hits.

GCC used eight pitchers on the day, beginning with a Tei Vanderford start that covered five innings and relented two runs.

Tyler Delzell pitched the 10th through 13th innings and gave up just one run, Jason Kim picked a runner off second with the bases loaded and two outs to end the 14th, while Brad Felt got the victory.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 8, Ventura College 1: Visiting Glendale picked up a Western State Conference win Tuesday. The Vaqueros got singles wins from Allie Amor (6-0, 6-0), Ashley Sumudio (6-4, 6-0), Amanda Dring (6-3, 6-3), Sydney Farzadkish (6-2, 6-3) and Fnu Nerrissa (6-4, 6-2). Glendale (8-6, 3-3 in conference) received doubles victories from Sofia Tavitian and Amor (9-8 (8-6), Sumudio and Nerrissa (8-4) and Farzadkish and Dring (8-3).

MEN’S TENNIS

Ventura College 7, Glendale Community College 2: The host Vaqueros suffered a Western State Conference defeat Tuesday. Glendale (7-5, 3-3 in conference) received singles victories from Andrew You (6-4, 6-2) and Son Tran (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).

BOYS’ GOLF

St. Francis 196, Alemany 214: Johnny Brandt shot an even-par 35 on Tuesday to lead the host Golden Knights in a Mission League match at Brookside Golf Course No. 2. Jack Tenney and Michael Finney each had 39s for St. Francis (4-3, 3-2 in league).

Webb 201, Flintridge Prep 236: Jack Bouchard and Jonah Sacks each had five-over-par 41s on Tuesday for the host Rebels in their Prep League opener at Altadena Golf Course. Flintridge Prep fell to 3-2.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep 3, Webb 0: Kareem Ismail finished with six kills Tuesday for the visiting Rebels in a Prep League-opening win, 25-9, 25-14, 25-14. Flintridge Prep improved to 9-6.

SOFTBALL

Campbell Hall 15, Flintridge Prep 6: The Rebels fell to 1-4 with Tuesday’s loss, that proved close until the top of the sixth, when Campbell Hall scored the final seven runs of the game in the stanza.

Ashley Kim had a double, a run scored and two runs batted in for the Rebels, while teammate Alex Tutwiler also drove in two.

BASEBALL

Crescenta Valley 4, Cajon 1: Pitcher Jonny Psaltis pitched five innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run to lead the Falcons (5-4) in a Babe Herman Tournament game at Stengel Field. Psaltis drove in a pair of runs. Bryan Wang, a reliever, pitched two perfect innings to earn the save.

Crescenta Valley suffered a 4-3 tournament loss to Birmingham on Monday. Ted Boeke threw 5 1/3 innings, allowed three hits and one earned run and struck out eight batters. At the dish, he had a home run and an a run-scoring triple. Joe Torres added a pair of hits for a CV squad that left the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh.
