Crescenta Valley baseball stalls against Oak Hill

GLENDALE — One really bad inning brought the Crescenta Valley High baseball team’s run in the Babe Herman Tournament to a dubious conclusion on Wednesday at Stengel Field..

Oak Hills scored 10 runs in the fifth en route to defeating tournament host Crescenta Valley, 12-2

“We ran out of pitching, so we got stuck with guys that haven’t pitched very much, are inexperienced,” said Falcon coach Phil Torres. “You get into a tournament, you play all these days in a row, there’s going to be day you’re going to get caught without some pitching.”

The top of the fifth was ugly no matter how you slice it. Crescenta Valley sent four different pitchers to the mound, collectively allowing seven hits and three walks. A wild pitch and two errors helped matters for Oak Hills (9-6), as well.

“Something important to learn from this is that we can’t let one thing get us down,” said Falcon senior Ted Boeke. “It felt like our energy just went down. The intensity was down.”

Things looked good for Crescenta Valley early when it held a 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Nolan Rea held his opponent scoreless through four innings, scattering four hits. But after walking a batter and having another reach base on an error with one out in the top of the fifth, the bullpen was called.

At the plate, the Falcons (5-5) managed only four hits, all of them coming in the first three innings.

“The rest of the tournament we hit great,” said Boeke, who had two hits and scored a run. “This team came out here and they threw strikes. Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize. I feel hitting-wise we’re doing fine. It was just one of those days where we didn’t hit.”

The Falcons had opportunities for so much more. They hit three consecutive singles to open the bottom of the first, but only managed one run. They had the bases loaded in the third with one out. but walked away empty handed.

“We had a chance to put some runs on them early and we didn’t do it,” Torres said.
