John Huh pars his way to making Masters cut

Pars were the norm for John Huh on Friday during the second round of 77th rendition of The Masters Tournament.

Huh, a 2008 Crescenta Valley High graduate and reigning PGA Rookie of the Year, relied on his short game. He wondered if his latest body of work would be strong enough to survive the cut at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

“I was a little disappointed that some of my putts didn’t go for birdies,” said Huh, who finished with 14 pars en route to shooting a five-over-par 77 on Friday on the 7,435-yard course. “The greens aren’t easy and I’m not too familiar with the course.

“When I teed off [Friday], I wasn’t thinking too much about the cut. After I finished my round, I wasn’t sure where I stood and I’m glad to still be playing.”

Huh finished the first two rounds with a three-over 147 to put him in a seven-way tie for 48th. The cut was 148.

Huh will tee off in the third round with Peter Hanson at 7:05 a.m. PDT Saturday.

Jason Day holds a one-stroke lead at 138 over Fred Couples and Marc Leishman. The tournament, one of four major championships, will conclude Sunday.

Huh, who helped Crescenta Valley win Pacific League championships in 2006 and 2007, parred the first two holes Friday before posting a bogey on the third hole. He then parred the next 10 holes before recording a bogey on the 14th.

Huh said he started to become a bit fatigued toward the latter stages of his round. He birdied the 15th hole before registering a double-bogey on 16 and bogey on 17 before finishing up with a par on 18.

“It got a little tough toward the end,” said Huh, who played briefly on the Korean Tour. “You try to learn from your experiences.

“I know that I have to continue to keep the ball in good position and try to make some more putts for birdies.”

Huh finished with four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars on Thursday.
