John Huh saves best for last at Masters
In the final round of his first appearance at the prestigious Masters Tournament, John Huh saved his best for last and, in turn, showed this very well could be just the beginning of many more trips to Augusta, Ga.
On Sunday at the 77th rendition of the major tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, Huh shot a four-under-par 68 – his best round of the tournament by two strokes – to finish with a four-day two-under-par 286. It was good enough to tie for 11th place, seven strokes behind Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera, who went to a playoff to decide the tournament, with Scott claiming a thrilling victory on the second hole.
Huh dazzled on the 15th, sinking an eagle on the par-five 530-yard hole. He added birdies on the second, third, seventh, ninth, 13th and 14th holes for six on the day. His day would’ve been truly exceptional had it not been for some big hiccups with bogeys on the first and 16th holes and a double-bogey on the par-four 10th.
While David Thoms and Michael Thompson shot five-under-pars, Huh and three others tied for the second-best score of the final day.
Last year’s PGA Rookie of the Year, Huh definitely showed he could hang with the best in his rookie appearance at the Masters. Huh opened the tournament Thursday with a two-under-70 before struggling Friday and carding a 77, but still narrowly making the cut. On Saturday, he rebounded with a 71.
It was the third major for Huh, a 2008 Crescenta Valley graduate, and far and away his best performance. He missed the cut for the British Open in July of last year and finished tied for 68th at the PGA Championship in August. Hence, though Huh saved his best for last at the Masters, it clearly seems to be a step in the right direction for the former Falcon in his second season on the tour.
