Glendale's Tina Karwasky to return to Alice Marble Cup

It’s on the road again for Tina Karwasky with another international goal to achieve.

For the second straight year, Karwasky, a Glendale resident, will represent the United States Alice Marble Cup team, as was announced Monday in a United States Tennis Assn. press release.

Karwasky will lead a four-woman squad that will take on some of the finest international teams in the 33rd International Tennis Federation Super Seniors World Team Championships. The event will take place Sept. 9-14 in Austria and the Czech Republic.

Karwasky will team up in the 60-and-over division with Kerry Young of Maitland, Fla., Martha Downing of Shingle Springs, Calif, and Mary Ginnard of Fort Lauderdale in the Klagenfurt region of Austria. Karwasky will serve as the team captain.

Karwasky, Downing and Ginnard were members of the winning team that topped the Netherlands last year in Croatia. En route to winning the title, the United States recorded wins against Finland, Spain and Australia.

“It’s an honor to be a part of this again and be able to represent the country,” said Karwasky, who is currently No. 2 in the latest International Tennis Federation singles rankings in the 60-and-over bracket. “We know there will be a lot at stake and we want to try to win it all again.

“I think we have a very strong team. We are like glue in that we stick together. We have the talent to do well. I remember last year being nerve-racking and very tough. We had some very hard matches. You know going in that people will be playing their best, so you best be prepared. We have a better idea of what to expect.”

About 30 countries are expected to compete in the Marble Cup.

Ginnard, 61, said the team is set to take on some of the elite teams from across the globe.

“It’s all about playing well and being ready,” said Ginnard, who, along with Karwasky, are ranked No. 1 in doubles by the ITF in the division. “This is an honor and it’s something we want to fulfill once again.”

Following the ITF Super Senior World Team Championships, the ITF Super Senior World Individual Championships will take place Sept. 15-22 in Poertschach, Austria.
