Former Vaquero Reid and Chiefs a hit in Philadelphia

For 14 seasons, Andy Reid stood along the sideline as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Reid, who played football at Glendale Community College from 1976-77, won a franchise-best 140 games with the Eagles from 1999-2012 before being fired last season.

Reid wasn’t out of work long, however, as the Kansas City Chiefs hired him as their new coach in early January. Reid returned to Philadelphia on Thursday night, standing on the other sideline, after leading the Eagles to an appearance in the Super Bowl in 2004.

Reid’s return to Philadelphia was a success, as Kansas City earned a 26-16 victory.

“It’s good to come back here,” Reid told the NFL Network following the game. “Nowhere has [Kansas City Chiefs] red felt better than today.

“These are great fans here [in Philadelphia]. I appreciate that. I appreciate what [Philadelphia owner] Jeffrey Lurie did for me the last 14 years. We are 3-0 and that makes the plane rides easier. We have room for improvement.”

Kansas City became the fifth team in NFL history to begin a season 3-0 after losing 14 or more games the previous season. Kansas City finished a league-worst 2-14 last season.

Moments after the game concluded, Reid, who was replaced by Chip Kelly, was greeted by former teammates. Among those included Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick, who served as Reid’s primary signal-caller the previous four seasons.

Kansas City’s defense stole the spotlight, forcing four turnovers and sacking Vick six times. Kansas City led throughout, jumping out to a 10-0 lead on a 38-yard interception return by Eric Berry with 11:20 remaining in the first quarter. The Chiefs, who opened the season with victories against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys, held a 16-6 halftime advantage.

The Eagles couldn’t get closer than a touchdown twice in the second half.

Kansas City standout running back Jamaal Charles rushed for 92 yards in 20 carries and scored one touchdown. Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason, completed 22 of 35 passes for 273 yards.

Kansas City will next compete Sept. 29 at home against the New York Giants.
