Glendale volleyball can’t keep up momentum in loss to Burroughs
BURBANK — The Glendale High girls’ volleyball team put a scare into Burroughs early during the teams’ Pacific League opener Thursday afternoon.
The Nitros played well in the early going of the first game against the Indians, jumping out to a four-game lead. But Burroughs battled back to win the opener, and Glendale would not enjoy a lead the rest of the contest, as the Indians went on to post a 25-17, 25-11, 25-11 victory at home.
The win was the first of the season for Burroughs (1-2), which suffered nonleague losses to Hart and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
“It’s nice to get that first win,” Burroughs Coach Edwin Real said. “We played some tough teams in the preseason, but we wanted to do that to help us get ready for league.”
Behind the play of Grace Tapin (seven kills) and Serena Snaer (five kills), Glendale (2-3) jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the first game. Although the Indians tried to erase the lead, they were never able to forge ahead midway through the frame.
But then the Nitros began to break down, and Burroughs took advantage.
“We were playing pretty good in the first game, but then we started to have our problems,” Glendale co-Coach Ta’ase Mose said. “Our real problem was with our serving. Once we started to have problems with our serving [Burroughs] was able to come on.”
The Indians finally took their first lead of the contest when Caitlin Cottrell (six kills) delivered a kill to make it 15-14. In the first game, Burroughs was trailing, 14-13, before embarking 7-0 run that ended with Burroughs enjoying a 20-14 advantage. The Indians ended the first game on an 11-3 tear.
“We wanted to start off with a lot of energy, but for some reason we didn’t to that,” said Cottrell, who earned All-CIF Southern Section accolades last season. “We just didn’t start very well.”
Alexis Hamilton added five kills and Katie Rutecki had 12 assists for Burroughs.
The Indians got their energy back to start the second game, as they began on a 6-0 run. The Nitros weren’t able to get closer than six throughout the remainder of the game.
Burroughs also began well in the third, taking a 4-1 advantage. Although Glendale did cut the lead to one, 7-6, the Indians rattled off a string of seven-straight points to surge ahead. They were able to coast the rest of the way.
