Sarah Teegarden bestowed with All-Atlantic Coast Conference honor

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Sarah Teagarden (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2013) Wake Forest women’s soccer freshman: Following a tenure at Flintridge Sacred Heart characterized by trips to the postseason and plenty of individual accolades, the talented midfielder continued along those same lines in her NCAA debut season.

Teegarden scored her first goal of the season at the most opportune of times, as well.

In the second round of the NCAA Division I playoffs, Teegarden connected on a 30-yard blast in the 81st minute to propel Wake Forest past Penn State, 1-0, on Nov. 22.

“I’ve been practicing them a lot, so it’s due time that one went in,” stated Teegarden on the school website about her tally. “I was just thinking to keep it low and hit it hard, and that’s what I did.”

Added Wake Forest Coach Tony da Luz: “It was a great goal from Sarah. No player deserves it more and does more of the quiet work behind the scenes than Sarah does. For her to get that winner is just incredible.”

Wake Forest’s NCAA run came to a close against top-ranked Virginia, 2-0, on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Demon Deacons finished at 12-7-2 and 5-6-2 in conference.

Teegarden, a midfielder, started every game of the season following a four-year varsity career with the Tologs that saw her recognized multiple times with All-Area and All-Mission League accolades while helping the program to a CIF Southern California Regional title and a CIF Southern Section Division I championship.

Released Nov. 7, Teegarden was also named a member of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman squad and was the only Demon Deacon to receive the honor.

Teegarden played participated in all 21 games the Demon Deacons played this season, tallying a goal and three assists and aiding a defense that allowed just 0.90 goals a game with eight shutouts.

Mallory Carcich (Crescenta Valley High, 2012) Cal Lutheran women’s soccer sophomore: A perennial All-Pacific League and All-Area selection in her days with the Falcons, Carcich has proved to be a stalwart for the Regals’ defense.

She played in all 23 Cal Lutheran matches this season and started in 21, including a season-ending, double-overtime loss to Puget Sound, 1-0, on Nov. 16 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Cal Lutheran finished 17-6 and won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, though it lost in the SCIAC postseason tournament final.

Carcich was part of a Regals defense that allowed just four goals over the last seven games of the season. In all, Cal Lutheran tallied nine shutouts and allowed only one goal in six games.

Cassandra Orozco (Crescenta Valley High, 2012) Pasadena City College women’s soccer sophomore: Orozco put an exclamation point on her days as a Lancer, earning All-South Coast Conference honors with her selection to the first team.

Playing under former Crescenta Valley Coach Reggie Rivas, as well as assistant Grant Clark, who’s currently the Falcons’ boys’ coach, Orozco played a crucial role for the Lancers.

On the season, Orozco, a midfielder, had a goal and three assists.

Orozco was also key in the Lancers’ defense, which was the strength of the team, allowing an average of 1.2 goals a game, with 11 of their 24 goals allowed coming in two matches against SCC champion Cerritos.

PCC finished 7-6-7 and 5-4-5 in conference for fifth place.

Craig Settles (Hoover High) Pasadena City College football sophomore: Though he never played varsity football at Hoover High, Settles has more than made his presence known at the college level.

Settles, who said he’s been offered a scholarship to play at Akron University and is receiving interest from other schools, concluded a season with the Lancers in which he was awarded All-Southern California Football Assn. National Northern Conference second-team recognition.

Settles tallied 28 tackles in 10 games, with 11 tackles for loss (for negative 41 yards) and four sacks. He also added a forced fumble.

The Lancers finished Pasadena finished 1-9, 1-5 in the Northern Conference National Division.
