Sports Roundup: Crescenta Valley High girls’ water polo wins Mistletoe Classic

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley 9, Newbury Park 7: The Falcons kicked off the new season much the same way they concluded 2012-13, which is to say winning titles.

Crescenta Valley scored two goals in the fourth quarter in gaining separation from host Newbury Park and won the Mistletoe Classic Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (5-0) led, 7-6, heading into the final quarter and relied on a stout defense to deny Newbury Park.

Ashley Taylor and Any Aghakhanian both scored three goals apiece to pace the Falcons, who began the day with a 14-5 victory over Buena in the semifinals.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 3, Cesar Chavez 1: Justin Wright, Matt Ryan and Jason Winicki each scored a second-half goal to help the Falcons (3-0-1) pick up a pool-play win in the Lancaster Eagle Cup on Saturday at Lancaster National Soccer Complex.

In an earlier tournament game, the Falcons recorded a 1-1 tie with Highland. Ryan scored for the Falcons and was assisted by Tony Royer.

St. Francis 2, San Fernando 2: The Golden Knights rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to forge a tie on Saturday evening in Ralph Brandt Tournament action.

Carlo Tagloretti and Jason Carmody scored a goal each for St. Francis (1-1-1).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Francis 61, St. Anthony’s 57: Kyle Leufroy poured in 18 points, while Evan Crawford had 15 to lead the Golden Knights to a fifth-place victory in the Rose City Classic at Maranatha High on Saturday.

St. Francis is now 3-1.
