Sports Roundup: Hoover High wrestling picks up league win

Hoover 42, St. Paul 30: The Tornadoes picked up a Rio Hondo League victory Thursday at home.

Geraldy Martinez led the way with a pin at 152 pounds for the Tornadoes, who improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in league.

Jesse Martinez moved weights to 145 pounds and delivered a victorious decision as did Davit Nersiyan (160 pounds), while 113-pounder David Balakeseryan also delivered a pin.

Hoover is back in action Thursday at San Marino at 4:30 p.m. with an opportunity to force a tie atop the Rio Hondo League standings.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Holy Family 45, Alverno 11: In the most lopsided win in two years, the Gaels rolled to a Horizon League road victory Thursday afternoon.

Senior guard Melissa Chan scored a season-high 16 points to pace Holy Family (2-12, 1-1 in league), which snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Gaels next host Bishop Conaty-Loretto on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Alemany 68, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 25: The Tologs dropped a Mission League road tilt Thursday afternoon.

With the defeat, Flintridge Sacred Heart dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 6, Alemany 3: The Tologs opened up Mission League play with a road victory Thursday afternoon.

Flintridge Sacred Heart (8-8 overall) led comfortably, 5-1, after three quarters and relied on three goals from sophomore Madeline Dulcich.

Defensively, the Tologs forced 12 steals, as goalie Elizabeth Hinckley finished with 12 saves.

Up next for Flintridge Sacred Heart is a road match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. versus Harvard-Westlake.
