Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College softball rallies for season-opening win
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Glendale Community College 13, Cerritos College 12: Following the death of veteran coach Dave “Hawk” Wilder in June, the Vaqueros looked to carry on and begin a new era.
Glendale began its season Tuesday in dramatic fashion, as it scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to register a nonconference victory at the Glendale Sports Complex.
Jasmine Hernandez singled in the winning run with two outs to spur the Vaqueros.
“It’s a huge win and I’m proud of what they were able to get done,” said coach Sal Pizzo, who served as Wilder’s assistant the previous six seasons. “They stayed with it until the end.
“We still have some things to work on, but we showed we could swing the bats well.”
Cassidy Clark blooped a single over the second baseman to knot it at 12. Hernandez finished with three hits.
MEN’S TENNIS
Glendale Community College 9, Cerritos College 0: The Vaqueros began their season Tuesday with a nonconference road victory. Glendale received 6-0, 6-0 singles wins from Hosep Orojian, Oleg Simonyan and Dat Le.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Cerritos College 11, Glendale Community College 1: The visiting Vaqueros (0-2) fell Tuesday in a nonconference game.
Glendale opened its season Monday with a 2-0 nonconference defeat against visiting Oxnard at Stengel Field. Glendale starting pitcher Angel Rodriguez went six innings, allowing one run and five hits. Jay Sheeley and Eddie Munoz had a pair of hits for the Vaqueros.
MEN’S GOLF
Glendale Community College in Bakersfield Invitational: Glendale placed sixth in the two-day event that concluded Tuesday. The Vaqueros finished with a two-round score of 811, getting a 155 from Evin Davis and a 157 from Andrew Salinas.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley College 66, Glendale Community College 62: Emmett Duvall finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds Saturday for the visiting Vaqueros in a Western State Conference South Division contest. Emerson Castaneda and Jalen Etienne had 11 points apiece for Glendale (15-4, 3-2 in division).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley College 76, Glendale Community College 67 (OT): The visiting Vaqueros fell Saturday in a Western State Conference South Division game. Gabriela Beltran had 15 points for Glendale, which was outscored, 12-3, in overtime. The Vaqueros (12-9, 3-2 in division) got 14 points from Elsie Mejia and 13 from Brenda Balbuena.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Crescenta Valley 2, Glendale 1: Izzy Costilla scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute Tuesday at Crescenta Valley to lead the Falcons to a Pacific League victory.
Crescenta Valley, which got its other goal from Hannah Weingarten off a Grace Keller assist, is now 5-7-1, 5-2-1 in league.
Glendale is 3-8-2 and 1-6-1.
Flintridge Prep 3, Mayfield 2: The Rebels picked up a wild Prep League victory at home on Tuesday.
Flintridge Prep (6-4-4, 2-1-1) trailed late, but received a goal from Chelsea Johnson in the 77th minute off an assist from Katherine Pinney before Johnson scored again in the 80th minute. Alexis Johnson scored the first goal of the match for the Rebels.
Chaminade 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: Nia Harris scored the lone goal for the visiting Tologs on Monday in a Mission League match. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Dani Garcia finished with 12 saves. The Tologs dropped to 8-5-2, 1-3-1 in league.
Burroughs 2, Hoover 0: The Tornadoes gave up a goal in each half of Tuesday’s Pacific League match, falling to 2-11-1 and 2-5-1 in league.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Flintridge Prep 2, Rio Hondo Prep 0: John Treinen and Riley Jones each scored a goal Tuesday to propel the host Rebels to a Prep League victory at the Glendale Sports Complex. Flintridge Prep improved to 11-3-2, 3-0-2 in league.
Burroughs 4, Hoover 0: The Tornadoes fell to 1-7-1 in the Pacific League with Tuesday’s loss on the road.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Holy Family 41, Alverno 5: Host Holy Family received 17 points from Alex Mata and nine from Hallie Jose on Tuesday to earn a Horizon League win at Pacific Park Community Center. Holy Family improved to 4-15, 3-3 in league.
Burroughs 64, Hoover 33: The Tornadoes suffered a Pacific League home defeat Tuesday to drop to 4-9, 2-6 in league.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Crescenta Valley 20, Pasadena 5: Audrey Taylor collected seven goals Tuesday to spark the visiting Falcons in a Pacific League match. Ani Aghakhanian and Lynley Fernandez had five goals apiece for Crescenta Valley (17-4, 4-0 in league).
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 11, Marymount 2: Maddy Dulcich finished with five goals and Mary Farley added three on Tuesday to lift the visiting Tologs to a Mission League victory. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hinckley had eight saves for the Tologs (12-13, 2-3 in league).
WRESTLING
Hoover 41, Monrovia 30: The Tornadoes capped their best season in program history with a Rio Hondo League road victory Tuesday afternoon.
Hoover 182-pounder Mike Sosa clinched the match for the Tornadoes with a pin. The victory moves Hoover into third place in the Rio Hondo League, which is the highest finish in program history. Hoover finished with a 6-2 overall mark and 3-2 mark in league, both also program bests.
