Sports Roundup: Shank, distance relays lead Glendale college women

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Relays: The Vaqueros put together a strong afternoon of results at Friday’s event at Ventura College.

Sophomore Justice Shank led the way for Glendale in not only returning to her former greatness, but eclipsing past success in breaking her school mark in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches, which topped her previous best of 5-7 set in 2012.

Shank was one of a few Vaqueros to both win her event and set a school record and was joined by the women’s distance relay squad, which did so twice.

The foursome of Lizette Gonzalez, Glindyll Mancia, Kelly Castillo and Lizzy Nelson won both the distance medley, in a new school record time of 12 minutes, 06.64 seconds (previous record was 12:08.71 in 2013), and the 4x800 relay in 9:23.92, which destroyed the old mark of 9:45.45 from last year.

Gonzalez and Mancia paired up for one more victory when they teamed with Nandi Watson and Narges Motamedi for a win in 4:03.47 in the 1,600-meter relay.

Aisaih Tuiasosopo came close to a victory in her event, finishing second in the discus with a toss of 35.83 meters.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Relays: There were many victories to go around for the Vaqueros at Ventura College on Friday, led by the throws.

Sophomore Chris Uribe turned in a brilliant afternoon in pacing Glendale with three victories.

Uribe won the hammer with a throw of 34.08 meters and also added victories in the discus (39.68) and the shot put (11.92).

For good measure, Uribe also concluded with an attempt of 42.26 meters that merited him third in javelin, which was eventually won by teammate David Renteria (49.58).

Cross-country veteran Enrique Ramirez shined again in the distances, taking first in 9:06.12 in the 3000-meter run, as the sophomore was one of four Vaqueros to finish in the top five.

Ramirez was also part of the second-place men’s distance medley squad of Edwardo Vasquez, Bryant Flores and Alejandro Chavez, who finished with a mark of 10:30.01.

Glendale also thrived in another distance relay, the 4x800, with the squad of Marc Marcano, Erik Sandoval, Chavez and Vasquez, who won their event with a time of 7:56.58.

Leaper Marcus Streeter also finished with a runner-up effort in the high jump with a leap of 2 meters flat.
