Roundup: Glendale Community College’s Lizette Gonzalez breaks school record

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Occidental Distance Carnival: The Vaqueros enjoyed a couple of wins Friday afternoon along with a banner effort from middle distance runner Lizette Gonzalez.

The sophomore set a new school record in the 800-meter run, running to second place in her heat in a time of 2 minutes, 13.77 seconds.

The time shattered the previous school best of 2:14.20, set by Jan Correia in 1980.

Sticking with the distances, sophomore Elizabeth Nelson ran to a victory in the first heat of the 1,500 with a mark of 4:33.65.

Glendale’s other triumph came from Nandi Watson, who picked up her side’s first victory when she clinched the second heat of the 400-meter run with a time of 59 seconds.

Glendale also had a few runner-up performances, including Narges Motamedi in the third heat of the 800 (2:23.74) and Justice Shank in the 100-meter dash (13.29)

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Occidental Distance Carnival: The Vaqueros posted two victories and several runner-up efforts on Friday afternoon.

The Vaqueros 4x100 relay squad of Rick Goulsby, Marcus Streeter, Raymond Ou and Jonathan Smith teamed up to win their event in 43.09. Glendale’s Erik Sandoval also captured his heat of the 800 with a mark of 1:59.03.

As for silver efforts, Charence Lauder was second in his heat of the 110-meter hurdles (17.13), Jonathan Smith (11.40) and Quaid Vuncannon (11.78) were both second in their respective heats of the 100-meter dash, Daniel Navarro finished runner-up in his heat of the 800 (2:00.45) and Jorge Mendoza was second-best in the steeplechase (9:56.56).

The Vaqueros 1,600 relay squad of Streeter, Ou, Lander and Bryant Flores were also No. 2 in 3:25.32.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Temple City 12, Flintridge Prep 6: The visiting Rebels (4-2) got a sweep in singles from Cartier Juan (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) on Friday in a nonleague match. Will Dixon of Flintridge Prep won two singles sets (7-5, 6-3).
