Glendale Community College women’s tennis team blanked in playoff match

After seeing its season conclude Tuesday with a first-round loss in the Southern California Regionals, the Glendale Community College women’s tennis team now eagerly awaits the status of Alexandra Amor’s right knee.

Amor, one of the Vaqueros’ top players, suffered an apparent knee injury early in her singles match during Glendale’s 5-0 road defeat against host Orange Coast.

Amor was tied at 2 in the first set before feeling some discomfort. After consulting with Glendale first-year Coach Deo Sy and an Orange Coast trainer, Amor chose to retire and her status for competing in the Western State Conference semifinals is up in the air.

Amor, a sophomore, is scheduled to team with Viktoriya Shumakova (Crescenta Valley High) in a conference semifinal match Friday in Ventura.

“It doesn’t look like a tear, but she will be reevaluated Wednesday [by the Glendale college training staff],” said Sy, whose team finished 12-4 and 8-2 in the Western State Conference for second place and earned the fifth seed in the playoffs. “She wanted to keep playing at first and she was mad about the injury.

“She walked around, which was a good sign at first. Then we asked her to walk laterally and she couldn’t do it. I told her we are done. There’s a chance she could hopefully play Friday.”

Fourth-seeded Orange Coast improved to 13-2 after placing second in the Orange Empire Conference. Orange Coast will participate in a second-round playoff match Tuesday.

Sy said the Vaqueros showed signs of improvement throughout the season.

“From the start of the season to up to now, they have shown progression,” said Sy, who took over the program from Bob Donaghy. “We wound up being a top-five team in Southern California and we took second in conference.

“I told our players that getting to the playoffs is something like a bonus round. We came in with nothing to lose. We lost to a tough Orange Coast team.”
