Sports Roundup: Crescenta Valley, Flintridge Prep and St. Francis turns in impressive wins at Mt. Sac Relays
BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Crescenta Valley, Flintridge Prep, St. Francis at Mt. San Antonio College Relays: Junior Ross Niederhaus led the way with an individual local boys’ victory Saturday afternoon as the St. Francis runner captured the seeded 400-meter dash in a time of 48.54 seconds.
Niederhaus outlasted Serra’s Ronny Hall, who was second in 48.61.
One of the great area battles took place in the pole vault, where Flintridge Prep’s Barreth Weiss met up with Burroughs’ Matt Schwartz.
Both athletes were intent on school history and both did so as Schwartz won the event in a personal-best effort of 15 feet, 6 inches, which tied the meet open record, set by Ventura’s Jake David.
While Schwartz won the event, Weiss set a new school record with a height of 15 feet, which was good for fourth overall and snapped brother Gareth Weiss’ record of 14-6, set on April 3.
The Crescenta Valley boys’ 4x1,600-meter relay team of Gabe Collison, Robert McNelis, Armin Cardenas-Nuno and Kyle Dickinson also delivered a victory in the open competition with a time of 18:22.94.
GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Crescenta Valley at Mt. San Antonio College Relays: Junior Emmie Walker delivered Crescenta Valley a victory and etched her name into the record books when she won the seeded high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches. The leap tied the meet record in the seeded event set by Arroyo Grande’s Alex Mero last year.
Walker tied with both Ventura’s Candice Dominguez-Field and Allison Parsons for the lead with 5-4, but won the event because she had fewer scratches.
Senior Kayleigh Carrillo had another big day in participating in three events.
Carrillo finished sixth in the seeded 400-meter dash with a mark of 58.25 and then later took seventh in the seeded 200-meter dash in a time of 25.34. The winner of the 200 dash, Long Beach Poly’s Kaelin Roberts, set a new meet record with a mark of 23.87.
Carrillo then joined up with Courtney Iannello, Walker and Megan Melnyk to take fourth in their seeded heat with a season-best time of 3:56.9. Overall, the Falcons finished sixth.
BASEBALL
Flintridge Prep 1-9, San Marino 2-6: The Rebels split a regional nonleague double-header on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels appeared on the brink of being swept before scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh to take the second game of the double-header, 9-6.
Senior Brendan McKiernan helped lead the charge for the Rebels (9-6-1) in the second game by going two for five with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Cole Pilar was three for four with a RBI and a run scored, while junior Isaac Kim was three for five with two runs and Cole Rademacher was two for four with a double, RBI and run scored.
Pilar (1-1) picked up the win in relief in tossing 2 2/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
In the first game, the contest went into extra innings before San Marino picked up a 2-1 victory in the eighth.
Rebels sophomore pitcher Richard Pan received a no-decision despite a strong start in which the hurler allowed one unearned run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
