Pilot forced to land helicopter in La Cañada

Ten Years Ago

A 26-year-old Arleta man lost for 11 days in the Angeles National Forest above La Cañada was rescued following a 911 call from hikers who came across him. The man said he fell 25 to 40 feet off of a cliff while attempting to walk home after his car, which had been parked at the Switzer campground, failed to start. He was ultimately discovered below Big Tujunga Dam, a considerable distance from his car and from the area rescuers had been searching.

The owner of Plaza de La Cañada unsuccessfully sought from City Hall a tree removal permit that would have allowed him to remove most of the trees in the shopping center (jacarandas, sycamores and yucca) and replace them with palm trees.

A patrol helicopter jointly owned by the Glendale and Burbank police departments was forced down by engine failure in an empty field in the upper Alta Canyada area of La Cañada. The pilot and his passenger were reportedly not injured.

Shoppers and store employees were evacuated from a Ralphs grocery store on the west side of La Cañada (where Ross Dress for Less operates today) after two bomb threats were called into the store on a Sunday afternoon in August 1972. Although a suspicious-looking bag was found by investigators, no explosives were in it.

Plans were announced for a proposed $3-million, 170-bed hospital to be built on the north side of Foothill Boulevard between Briggs Avenue and Oceanview Boulevard. Developer Grandvell M. Shumaker of San Marino was seeking a zone exception from the county to allow for the facility.

La Cañada Postmaster Edwin Cooper said he was surprised and pleased when, in August 1952, district postal headquarters unexpectedly assigned to his office a fleet of seven new Dodge delivery trucks.
