La Cañada History: Youth House offered swimming for locals

Ten Years Ago

A La Cañada woman, Christy Cassell, a political independent, announced she would mount a campaign to run in the fall 2003 gubernatorial recall election to replace Gray Davis.

Twenty Years Ago

A real estate agent announced that he had sold a Berkshire Avenue home for a record amount, reportedly between $4 million and $5 million, all cash. The English-style house had been built in 1989. The previous record in La Cañada Flintridge was the 1992 sale of a Hillcrest Avenue home for $1.575 million.

Thirty Years Ago

The Presbyterians won the first round of games when the Crescenta-Cañada Church Softball League began its summer 1983 play.

Forty Years Ago

La Cañada residents of all ages were taking advantage during the summer of 1973 of the third annual community swimming program at the La Cañada High School pool, under the sponsorship of the Youth House (today known as the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge) and the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA.

Fifty Years Ago

Three busloads of teens and adult chaperons traveled from the Youth House to the Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 1963 to take in a Peter, Paul and Mary concert. The trio had just a few months earlier released their hit, “Puff, the Magic Dragon.” Said to be particularly excited about the outing were the 60 youths who were taking guitar classes at the local center that summer.

Sixty Years Ago

A burning cigarette that had accidentally been dropped on a sofa caused a fire that extensively damaged a home on Greencrest Road. The occupants, including the home’s owner who had dozed off while smoking, all escaped the building without injury.
