Ten Years Ago: A request for permission to begin a planning phase for a $230,000 outdoor science lab on the La Cañada Elementary School campus was approved by the La Cañada school board. The structure would be built at not cost to the district. Instead, a steering committee of the school’s parents said they would raise the necessary funds.

The city of La Cañada Flintridge appointed Gabrielle Pryor to the post of city manager, the fourth person to hold the position since the city’s 1976 incorporation. Pryor was among 52 applicants for the job.

Thirty Years Ago

Edward Verso was named artistic director of a new ballet company for dancers 13 and up that was formed under the auspices of the La Cañada Flintridge Ballet Foundation.

Forty Years Ago

Bob Mahoney, who made local headlines after the 1969-70 La Cañada High School football season when he was ousted as head coach, announced in September 1970 that he was resigning that month from his teaching position at the school to enter the field of real estate.

Fifty Years Ago

A 13-year-old La Cañada boy was left lying in the curb on Chevy Chase Drive after a man grabbed his expensive bicycle as he was pedaling past, causing the boy to lose his balance and fall off. The man then rode off on the racing bike himself. A few weeks later the bike was found by another La Cañada resident in a canyon behind Descanso Gardens.
