Gala tickets, masquerade masks available
This year’s La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation’s Masquerade Gala is nearing. The event will be held March 19 at the Pasadena Convention Center.
In celebration of the arts, the gala will feature its first student art show. Elementary student art is available for online auction at gala.lcfef.org/auctions.
Tickets can be purchased online at lcfef.org/rsvp. Additionally, Adobe, located at 852 Foothill Blvd. La Cañada, has an assortment of masks for both men and women for sale.

Girl Scout parents can nominate outstanding leaders
Nominations are being sought for local “Outstanding Leader” or “Leader with a Heart” awards from the La Cañada Flintridge Girl Scout program. The awards are presented at the end of the school year at a leader recognition dinner.
The Outstanding Leader award goes to a leader or co-leader for outstanding performance in working with girls and effective use of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to discover, connect and take action.
The Leader with a Heart award is given to a leader or co-leader by parents and girls in a troop who believe the nominee to be outstanding in program delivery and troop leadership and who leads their troop with heart.
The nomination form can be found online at www.lcfgirlscouts.net. The form, plus two letters of endorsement from troop members or their families, must be submitted by March 15 to Joan Raney, 830 Green Lane, La Cañada 91011.
LCPC Parent Ed Spring Gala is March 25
“Opa, A Night Out in Old Town Benefitting Parent Education,” will be held on March 25 to benefit the La Cañada Presbyterian Church program. The event gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Café Santorini’s Rococco Room, situated in Old Town Pasadena.
Those who attend the event will be able to enjoy a Mediterranean feast while bidding on silent- and live-auction items. The night will include Chris Erskine from the L.A. Times and Chuck Osburn from La Cañada Presbyterian Church, as well as live jazz guitar music preformed by Ryan Dart of CalArts.
Another special attraction of the night will be the bestowing of the first ever “Shining Star Award” to former JPL engineer and volunteer Dennis Carpenter, of La Cañada.

LCPC Parent Education hosts 14 classes per week for parents of children 0-18. Space is still available in some classes. The Parent Ed program offers a free trial class for those who wish to attend a class before registering. Friday night Happy Hour for LCF “floaters”
On Friday, Feb. 25, the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Happy Hour will take place at the Lanterman House, 4420 Encinas Drive, La Cañada. Hours for the event are 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Guests can tour the house and LCF Tournament of Roses memorabilia. Bring hors d’oeuvres to share, buy drink tickets. Docents will assist guests to tour the house, while the happy hour is located on the patio by the museum’s garage. Warm attire is recommended. Adults only; no reservations required.
Special Children’s League tours facility
Members of the Foothill committee of Special Children’s League recently joined members of the Whittier Committee for a tour of Casa de La Armistad in Glendale.
The facility, which opened last year, provides 24 fully-accessible and affordable apartments for people with developmental disabilities. The tour was led by Ron Cohen, president and chief executive of United Cerebral Palsy.
Of special interest to the members of the local committee was a garden fountain that displays a decorative tile donated by the group in support of the Special Children’s League/United Cerebral Palsy programs.
After the tour, La Cañada members Mary Achterman, Carmen Besancon, Gwen Brown, Nancy Fraines, Nancy Illian, Ruth Lyle, Betty McMurray and Jean O’Connell joined UCP staff member Margarete Preusser for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory at Americana on Brand.
Auction items sought for St. Francis event
The St. Francis High School POSH (Preserving Our Scholastic Heritage”) auction committee is seeking auction items for its 2011 benefit black-tie gala, “Knights, Camera, Action” to be held on March 12, at The Langham Hotel and Spa in Pasadena. The school’s fund-raising goal is $500,000, according to Linda Koklas, POSH co-chairman.
The funds raised will be earmarked for the Fr. Matthew Elshoff Endowment Fund and the school’s general scholarship funds.
The event will feature dinner, dancing, and silent and live auction. Popular past donations to the auctions have included home electronics, gaming systems, vacations of all kinds, event tickets, fine jewelry and watches, bicycles, barbecues, accent furniture, sports memorabilia and art pieces. One-of-a-kind or unique items are especially welcome, and a parent volunteer will be pick up any donation.

Women’s Chorus to attend Long Beach event
The Verdugo Hills Women’s Chorus will travel to St. Cyprian Catholic Church in Long Beach for the Southern Area Rehearsal on March 5, where various women’s choruses will gather to rehearse the music that will be presented at the annual convention and concert May 1 in Glendale.
This will be the first time many of the singers will meet Desiree La Vertu, guest director and presently the director of Choral Music at Occidental College.
