Verdugo Hills Hospital recently announced the appointment of Charles W. Mason as chairman of the hospital board.

“As a member of the VHH Board of Directors for the past seven years, I have learned a great deal about what it takes to run Verdugo Hills Hospital,” Mason said in a news release. “The hospital has been able to withstand and adhere to all the new state regulations that have been imposed on us, even in spite of all the federal financial cutbacks. The most important thing about our ‘jewel on the hill’ is that our doors are open 24/7 to serve this wonderful community. We have the highest quality of medical and administrative staff as well as a wonderfully enthusiastic group of volunteers. There is a real sense of family among all the people associated with the hospital, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

Mason is the founder and president of Charles W. Mason & Associates Inc. A Glendale resident, he has served as a commissioner for the Glendale Parks and Recreation Commission and was president of the Glendale/Crescenta Valley American Red Cross and the Glendale Jaycees. He was also a member of Glendale Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors, where he served as treasurer.

Mason has specialized in tax and financial planning for more than 30 years. He earned the designations of Certified Financial Planner in 1980 at the College of Financial Planning in Denver and Chartered Life Underwriter in 1983 at American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He majored in business administration at Montgomery College and the University of Maryland and studied finance while in the United States Air Force. He is a registered investment advisor and a licensed securities advisor with the Securities and Exchange Commission and National Association of Securities Dealers and currently registered with Cambridge Investment Research. He is active in the International Assn. of Financial Planners and the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters and was recently recognized by “Worth Magazine” and “Los Angeles Magazine” as an Outstanding Wealth Manager for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Married for more than 42 years, Mason and his wife, Christine, who is a volunteer at Verdugo Hills Hospital, have two grown sons and one grandchild.

Pasadena man new chair of VHH Foundation Board

Darrell Spence, who joined the Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation Board in 2007 and served as both treasurer and vice chairman, has been named board chairman.

Spence lives in Pasadena with his wife, Sarah, and two daughters, both of whom were born at Verdugo Hills. Darrell grew up in La Cañada, and his father, Dr. John Spence, was an anesthesiologist at the local hospital for nearly 30 years.

“Virtually every individual’s life will, at some point, be touched by health care,” Spence said. “Verdugo Hills Hospital provides that care with a high level of quality, the latest technology and a personalized touch, right here in the middle of our community! As the hospital approaches its 40-year anniversary, I want to help ensure that the foundation remains solidly in a position to support the hospital in this endeavor for many, many more years to come.”

Spence is a vice president and economist for Capital Strategy Research, one of the Capital Group Companies. He joined the organization in 1992 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in economics (cum laude) from Occidental College in Los Angeles. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Assn. of Independent Manufacturers’/Representatives and the National Assn. for Business Economics, as well as a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
