Italian lakes topic of travelogue

Lakes Como, Maggiore and Garda are among the scenic places armchair travelers will visit when the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada’s Travel Adventure series shines the spotlight on Italy beginning at 7:10 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The travelogue will be presented in the auditorium of Flintridge Prep, 4543 Crown Ave., La Cañada.

The lakes are long crevices that glaciers carved into the Alps. Fed by melting snows, the lakes lead to historic alpine passes of Brenner and St. Gotthard.

The travelogue will take viewers to Lake Maggiore, one of Italy’s most coveted retreats. The region was popular in Roman times; later it was chosen as a vacation destination by the nobility of Milan.

The film visits Isola Bella, the Boromeo palace and garden and nearby Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island), Bellagio and Varenna.

Kiwanis has sponsored these adventures for the past 50 years for the enjoyment of La Cañada Flintridge residents as well as for residents of nearby communities. Individual performances are $8 a person. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with pre-show entertainment at 7:10 p.m.

This year the travel adventure performances consist of six programs. To date they have included trips to “The Soul of India” in February, “Japanland” in March, and Portugal in April, and now, “An Italian Lakes Adventure” will be shown this month. The final adventure will be shown in June as Kiwanis will take guests on “An East African Safari.”
