Four scouts achieve Eagle rank

Four scouts from La Cañada troop 398 will be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor to be held Sunday. Under the guidance of Scout Master Roger Anderson, McKay Anderson, Alden Geller, Tanner Massimino and Grant Owens completed all necessary requirements for rank advancement. All are welcome to attend the Court of Honor Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building, located at 1830 Foothill Blvd., in La Cañada.

Lutheran High School La Verne student McKay Anderson will receive his Eagle Scout award Sunday for constructing a bird blind for nature study at the Los Angeles Unified School District Outdoor Education Campus in the Angeles National Forest.

“I chose this project,” said McKay, “because it was something that would benefit many children who come to the center — students who rarely get an opportunity to get out of the inner city.”

Twenty members of Troop 398 and other friends joined McKay in building the bird blind, which is a screen that is used to observe wildlife, especially birds, at close quarters.

Alden Geller, a junior this fall at La Cañada High School, orchestrated a food drive for the SOVA Community Food and Resource Program. SOVA, a Hebrew word that means “eat and be satisfied,” provides free food and supportive services to more than 10,000 individuals each month. With community support, Alden took in more than 1,500 pounds of food.

Tanner Massimino

organized a book and educational materials drive for his Eagle Scout project to benefit the Los Angeles based organization Para Los Niños.

Para Los Niños, located by Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, is a nonprofit family service organization that provides childcare, schooling and other services to at-risk children and their families. With the support and help of fellow scouts from Troop 398 and contributions from the La Cañada community, Tanner gathered hundreds of books and educational supplies to help less fortunate children.

For his Eagle project, Grant Owen combined his love of sports with community service by organizing a renovation of the varsity baseball dugouts at La Cañada High School. This involved removing the deteriorating shelves inside the dugouts and replacing them with new, more durable shelves for storing baseball equipment, and a new coat of paint.
