Crime Report: Unsecured home under renovations targeted by burglars

Feb. 10
Identity theft: 2800 block of Stevens Street, La Crescenta. A man reported discovering that someone had used his personal identity on Jan. 1 to fraudulently open a credit card with Bank of the West. The card had been used to make a purchase on Jan. 28 and Ben Bridge Jeweler and had made credit inquiries to several other retailers. The victim had also received on Jan. 18 an email from Dell detailing with quotes some items he’d purportedly inquired about that included shipping information for the products that would have had them delivered to an apartment on Las Palmas Avenue in Los Angeles.

Feb. 11
Vandalism: 3000 block of Community Avenue, La Crescenta. Sometime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Feb. 5 someone scratched the full length of a 2013 Toyota Camry that had been left parked on the street in front of its owner’s home. She did not report it at the time. Then, on Feb. 11 she found a note on her car’s windshield. The words the note contained were redacted from the crime report, but it was noted that the message was being placed in evidence.

Mail theft: 4900 block of Rosemont Avenue, La Crescenta. A man said he received a message and photo via the Amazon app on his phone notifying him a package he was expecting had been delivered to his mailbox at 10 a.m. When he checked the mailbox at 2 p.m. the package was no longer there.

Feb. 13
Burglary: 3700 block of Chevy Chase Drive, La Cañada. A man reported that a stainless-steel refrigerator, stainless-steel range hood and a cement-cutting saw were stolen sometime between Feb. 6 and Feb. 13 from his home, which is undergoing renovations. An investigation concluded entry to the home had been gained from the front of the house where there was not a secured front door in place.

Feb. 14
Attempted burglary: 200 block of Mariner’s View Lane. Two men were caught on video surveillance and seen by a witness fleeing the area after they attempted to break into a home via its master bathroom window and triggered an alarm at 8:48 a.m. The two were seen running away from the property and getting into a gray, four-door sedan that sped off.

Feb. 15
Theft by access card: 2900 block of Montrose Avenue, Glendale. A man learned on receiving a phone call from Citibank that between Dec. 1 and Feb. 14 there were charges against his account made at a Walmart and at Home Depot. He had not authorized the use of any of his credit cards.

Using a computer to steal funds: 2200 block of Montrose Avenue, Montrose. A woman was notified by Bank of America that her checking account was overdrawn. Looking into it, she learned that funds had been stolen by someone using her account’s routing information.

Theft by false pretenses: 2900 block of Stevens Street, La Crescenta. A man who sold a pair of Nike Dunk shoes via the app OfferUp said the “buyer” claimed after receiving them in the mail that they were not authentic. The buyer demanded a refund. OfferUp gave him the money back and sent him a mailing label to return the shoes to the seller. The seller (victim) received instead a different Nike box than he had originally sent and the shoes were not in it. Instead it contained a pair of black pants. He said he contacted OfferUp and was told the company is not liable for fraudulent transactions.
