Host South Pasadena, which hasn’t won many games this season, surprised the La Cañada girls’ varsity softball team with an 8-1 Rio Hondo league win on May 6.

The Spartans dropped their overall record to 11-10 and their league mark to 7-4. They played Monrovia at home in the final regular league game of the season on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

La Cañada actually took an early lead with a run in the top of the third inning. South Pasadena tied the score with a run in their half of the frame. The Tigers moved out to a 2-1 advantage with a run in the fifth inning, but it was the sixth inning where all the damage was done as South Pasadena scored six runs to break the contest open.

Candace Ondrejcka went all the way for the loss and her record fell to 6-8.

The Spartans got eight hits, but committed five errors. Lana Sanfilippo went 2-for-4 and knocked in the only run for La Cañada.

Earlier, Courtney Turner nearly pitched an entire game against host San Marino in league play on May 5, but it took Ondrejcka to get the final two outs for the 3-2 victory.

Turner went six-and-one-third innings. Ondrejcka came in to quell a possible rally and got out of a bases loaded situation to preserve the win and earn her first save of the season.

La Cañada scored a run in the top of the second inning and two more in the third. The Titans came back with a run in the bottom of the third.

Turner, who allowed seven hits, picked up the win and improved to 5-2. Ondrejcka, who struck out one, also collected two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run. Turner also got a hit, scored a run and batted in another run. Kim Chau finished with two hits. Getting singles were Lisa Leverton, Ashley Messenger and Sanfilippo.

Erin Miller and Sanfilippo scored the other runs for the Spartans.
