The Christopher A. Burrows Memorial Scholarships, each for a minimum of $1,500, will be awarded to college-bound high school seniors from the Crescenta-Cañada Valley on May 17.

This is the sixth year that this award will be given to students who demonstrate a high level of academic and extracurricular achievement as well as strength of character and zest for life. Last year five local students received scholarships.

Applications are available online at www.glendalecommunityfoundation.org, as well as at the counseling offices of Crescenta Valley High School, La Cañada High School, Clark Magnet School, Flintridge Preparatory School, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, St. Francis High School and at the Glendale Community Foundation. Graduating seniors who reside in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose or Verdugo City and who attend high school in La Crescenta or La Cañada Flintridge are urged to apply. The application deadline is Monday, March 21.

Interviews will be in April, and this year’s Burrows Scholars will be honored at a dinner following the annual Chris Burrows Memorial Golf & Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, May 17.

The Burrows Scholarship fund was established in memory of Christopher Burrows, a longtime resident of La Cañada Flintridge and a 1976 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School who died in 1999 from a brain tumor. It is a fitting legacy for a man who was actively involved in school and community affairs, was devoted to friends and family, and encouraged young and old alike. The Burrows Scholarship also will be honoring the memory of Chris’s mother, Frederika Burrows who passed away on March 6.
