The La Cañada girls’ junior varsity volleyball team finished in first place out of 48 teams who participated in the Gabrielino Volleyball Tournament held in San Gabriel last Saturday.

After finishing first in pool play, the Spartans defeated Gladstone (Covina) and Burbank to reach the semi-finals, where they faced a tough Santa Fe Springs St. Paul squad.

La Cañada had already beaten St. Paul in a difficult three-game match during pool play, and lost the first semi-final game, 25-20. After winning the second game, 25-21, the Spartans let six match-points slip through their fingers and successfully defended two elimination points before prevailing in the third game, 23-21.

La Cañada defeated Maranatha, 25-20 and 25-22, in the tournament’s final match.

Varsity volleyball coach Brock Turner assumed the junior varsity coaching duties in the absence of Andrew Watson who has been in England with his family following his grandmother’s death.

Setter Charlotte Cashell-Varga was named tournament MVP, while middle blocker Molly Burger and outside hitter Molly Teodo were named to the all-tournament team.
