Spartans Wins MVP Award in Football, Water Polo Sports

Although La Cañada senior David Hopkins won’t get to play in a CIF Southern Section Division X championship game next week, he did cap his high school career with an outstanding honor.

Hopkins was named the co-Most Valuable Player for football, along with Temple City’s Shun Tsin Tsai, in All-Rio Hondo League lists released this week. The Spartans were defeated in the quarterfinals last Friday night by Lompoc Cabrillo.

In addition, La Cañada teammates junior Devon Borisoff and senior Gamal Rady were named co-MVP in boys’ water polo. The Spartans won the CIF-SS Division III Championship last week over Montebello.

In other football honors, junior Spencer Tompkins was named co-Defensive Lineman of the Year along with Temple City’s Marc Scholvinck.

Making the All League First Team -- Offense were junior Lavelle Peterson in the back position, senior T.J. Trumbo at quarterback, senior Nick Sparks at wide receiver, junior Justin Luthey at guard and senior Austin Batista at center.

On the All League Second Team -- Offense were junior Roger Romero at running back and senior Joe Hummel at tackle.

Spartans making the All League First Team -- Defense were junior Brian Schmidt at defensive back and Romero at linebacker.

All League Second Team -- Defense selections were senior Evan Elsaden at defensive back, senior Alex Sakai and junior Connor Ulf at down lineman positions.

Receiving All League Honorable Mention were seniors Kyle Clark and Nick Listo and junior Matt Paneno.

In boys’ water polo, All League First Team picks included seniors Doug McNeese and Jordan Thompson and sophomore Max Scott.

All League Second Team selections were junior Wes Lewis and sophomores Mike Scott and Nathaniel Vail.

Honorable Mentions went to junior Caleb Greig and freshman Spencer Borisoff.
