Fifty Years Ago ...

Plans were underway to make the “Citizen of the Year” award an annual tradition of the La Cañada Kiwanis Club, it was announced by Dr. Ross LeLansky in January 1956. It had been LeLansky who had the idea of giving an award to an outstanding citizen who had brought honor to the community and the first such honor had been made to tennis champion Ted Schroeder in 1951. Since that year, though, the project had remained dormant, so LeLansky announced his committee would “set up definite policies governing candidates for the award.”
