Prep Beats Nia, 59-41, For Ninth Place in SG Tournament

Ending a three-game losing streak, the Flintridge Prep boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Nia, 59-41, last Friday to win ninth place in the San Gabriel High Tournament.

The Rebels upped their mark to 3-9. They hosted Sun Valley Village Christian in a nonleague contest on Tuesday, but no results were available at press time.

Prep will begin Prep League play tomorrow (Friday) with a 7:30 p.m. game at Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep. The Rebels will also host Chadwick School in a 7:30 p.m. league tussle next Tuesday.

Prep eased out to a small 13-11 lead over Nia at the end of the first quarter and kept enlarging it. The Rebels led 25-15 at the half and 39-26 after three quarters.

Prep’s Andrew Beck led all scorers with 20 points. Daniel Hurley was next with 16 points. Mark Rodli added eight points, both Brady Thomson and Dylan Walker scored five points each and Ryan Lamont finished with three points.

In tournament pool play last Thursday, Covina Gladstone got by Prep, 47-43.

Gladstone opened with a 13-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter, led only 18-17 at the half, but moved out to a 35-31 lead after three quarters.

Beck topped all scorers with a 28-point effort. Rodli was next with eight points. Thomson had six points and Aaron Fried added three points.

In tournament pool play on Dec. 28, Oxnard Hueneme dropped the Rebels, 53-39.

Prep suffered a power outage in the first half, scoring a combined 12 points. Hueneme led 23-12 at the half and 35-25 after three quarters.

Beck pumped in a game-high 28 points. Thomson added three points and Fried and Hurley scored two points each.

In tournament pool play on Dec. 27, the Rebels lost to Belmont.
