LC United Methodist Church:African Orphanage Aided by $3,000 Check From United Methodist Church

Dr. Carolyn Rowley came to the La Cañada United Methodist Church on July 2nd to receive a check for $3,000. Dr. Rowley, a member of Emmanuel Church in Burbank, has been actively working with the Machao Orphanage in Kenya during the last year.

The La Cañada United Methodist Church has become a partner in this mission. The orphanage cares for 13 AIDS orphans, but the need is much greater than that. The $3,000 check is the matching funds needed to finish the new building, which will house about 40 children.

Ground has been broken and construction begun on the new orphanage building. Dr. Rowley will travel to Kenya in August to examine the progress. She will take with her hundreds of pairs of shoes collected by church member Katharine Henry and her Girl Scout Troop 576 of La Cañada Flintridge.

Dr. Rowley will also take enough quilts for each child and the caretaker.

These quilts were handmade at the church by church members, Girl Scouts and people from the community, and were prayed over by the church. Church member Marie Henry coordinated the quilt project.

Dr. Rowley will also bring someone back from her trip to Kenya. The doctor is adopting a little girl named Maini, from the orphanage to become part of her family. Both Emmanuel Church and La Cañada United Methodist Church look forward to meeting her new daughter and hearing of progress at the Machao Orphanage.Caption: MONEY FOR AFRICA ?
