Opera at Lanterman

According to Melissa Patton, executive director of the Lanterman House, the hardest part about putting on a concert in the Lanterman Gardens is getting a piano there. “We couldn’t move the piano in the ballroom,” Patton said, and so they were forced to rent a piano.

Despite these mild difficulties, this Sunday, July 27, at 5 p.m. vocalists Nandini Sinha, Keiko Clark, Matt Dunn, and Arthur Freeman will perform a concert of opera duets, trios, and quartets at the museum, 4420 Encinas Drive, La Cañada.

The performers, who Patton described as “wonderful and very enthusiastic,” come from all sorts of musical backgrounds. Sinha, a mezzo-soprano, has performed in Los Angeles, New York, and around Europe. Clark, the soprano, hails from Tokyo and graduated from USC and the New England Conservancy. Tenor Matt Dunn studies and practices medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine, but participates in many Los Angeles area choirs. Freeman, a bass-baritone from New Jersey, earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees at CSUN, and performs locally.

The Lanterman board decided on an opera to allow the community to enjoy “some lovely classical music. We like to have some sort of musical program [at The Lanterman], this one just got delayed. It’s pieces from various operas. [Think of it] as a fun summer-like event for members of the community,” Patton said.

Tickets are $15 and include a complimentary tour of the museum, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Light refreshments will be served following the concert. For reservations call Lanterman House at (818) 790-1421.
