As the state continued with its aerial malathion spraying of Southland communities to save citrus crops from the ravages of the Mediterranean fruit fly, the La Cañada Flintridge City Council voted 4-1 to send a letter to Gov. George Deukmejian and other state representatives asking that this city be spared until the method was deemed safe for humans and animals.

A fire of unknown origin destroyed the former Green Submarine Nursery in western La Cañada. No one was injured in the early morning blaze, which burned through two buildings adjacent to each other in the 2200 block of Foothill Boulevard.

The Ballet Petit Concert Dancers were preparing for their upcoming performance of “Giselle” at Lanterman Auditorium. It was announced the dancers would be accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra.

A 6-year-old La Cañada girl escaped serious injury when she was struck by a car as she darted across Oakwood Avenue near La Porte Drive. The youngster was tossed into the air by the impact but suffered only bruises to her forehead and knees.
