Bank robbery thwarted

A bank robbery in La Cañada Flintridge was foiled Friday after a dye pack activated and the suspect abandoned the cash, authorities said.

The suspect entered Citizens Business Bank in the 800 block of Foothill Boulevard at noon on Friday. He passed a note to a teller stating he had a gun and demanded money, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Harley said. No weapon was seen during the incident.

The teller complied with the note, and the suspect left with an undetermined amount of cash, Harley said.

“The suspect walked westbound to the old Sport Chalet building and at some point the dye pack activated,” Harley said.

The suspect abandoned all or most of the money in the former store’s parking lot, across Buelah Drive from the bank, Harley said, and fled in a white, mid-size SUV.

“A vehicle was seen by witnesses but was gone prior to the arrival of deputies,” Harley said.

The robbery was captured by security cameras. The suspect was described as a white male in his 50s, approximately 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. He had bushy white hair and a white mustache. He was wearing dark jeans, a long sleeved, blue-and-white striped dress shirt and a white baseball hat with a logo on it.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station at (818) 248-3464.
