The Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Mothers Guild fielded a winning fund-raiser themed “A League of Our Own,” for which the school’s student activities center was transformed into a “ballpark.” The event raised nearly $120,000 for the campus.

The basketball team for Ribet Academy, then located in La Cañada Flintridge, became Division 5 State Champs with a 70-65 win over University High School.

The La Cañada school board began the process of determining school programs within a budget that called for a reduction in the number of classes at LCHS and increased class sizes.

A La Cañada woman’s home was burglarized while she slept, despite the fact she had locked all the doors and windows before retiring. The Hampton Road resident reported the intruder had gotten away with her purse, a pressure cooker, a frying pan, a blanket and $180 in cash.
Fifty Years Ago
Residents in the upper Alta Canyada area complained of screeching peacocks invading their neighborhood. Local youths, with help from Montrose Sheriff’s Station personnel, rounded up the 15 wayward birds and returned them to their owner, Frank P. Doherty of Vista del Valle Road. It wasn’t the first time his peafowl had escaped, Doherty told the deputies.
Sixty Years Ago
Master Sgt. Russell Fewell of Salisbury Road in La Cañada, a veteran of many searches for missing planes in his service with the Civil Air Patrol, was killed when his light plane crashed in Big Tujunga Canyon while on a search training mission. He was 38. Also perishing in the accident was his student pilot, Pvt. Peter Bessolo, a Glendale resident.
