Ten Years Ago

City officials helped break ground for a Rubio’s/Wolf’s Camera Shop project on Foothill Boulevard at Commonwealth Avenue. The site, at the intersection’s northwest corner, was previously home to a Mobil Oil service station.


Twenty Years Ago

Actor/director Kevin Costner, then a resident of La Cañada Flintridge, saw his film “Dances with Wolves” presented with seven Oscars at the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony held at the Shrine Auditorium.


Thirty Years Ago

A Caltrans truck lost its brakes traveling downhill on Angeles Crest Highway and overturned at the intersection of Foothill and ACH. The driver, who was shaken up in the accident, was transported to Verdugo Hills Hospital for observation.


Forty Years Ago

Through the efforts of the Paradise Canyon Elementary School PTA, the county ordered stop signs to be placed on Oakwood Avenue at Knight Way and on Lynnhaven Lane at Commonwealth Avenue, for the safety of youngsters walking to and from the school campus.


Fifty Years Ago

Two men who were preying on unlocked cars parked overnight on Grand Avenue were chased off by gunfire. A 29-year-old resident of the street, hearing noises outside, stepped out into his yard and emptied his 32-caliber pistol into the bottom half of the pair’s getaway car.


Sixty Years Ago

Cub Scouts held a kite-flying contest at Paradise Canyon Elementary School. A highlight of the event was the loss of young Eric Hansen’s kite “at stratospheric levels,” according to a newspaper account, and its later recovery in the nearby hills by his sister on horseback.
