MC CARDY, John Stewart
April 1, 1916 – March 20, 2011

John S. Mc Cardy, age 94, died in Pasadena, Ca. from complications of a stroke suffered eight weeks prior. An avid walker, he had just walked two miles up the Arroyo in Pasadena two days before his stroke. Born in Los Angeles, CA in 1916 to John Patrick and Henrietta Catherine Mc Cardy; his early years were spent in Los Angeles and Hermosa Beach with his younger brother Derk, where he acquired his love of baseball, the beach, and body surfing.
He attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA. With the advent of WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the 5th Marine Corps division on the Island of Iwo Jima. He married the love of his life, Harriet E. Johnson, in 1943. After the war, they lived in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, where their sons John A. and James P. were born. The family relocated to La Canada Flintridge in 1964. John had a 37 year career with the Southern California Gas Co., retiring in 1983 as the manager of customer service for the Glendale division. In retirement he attended Catholic Mass daily and volunteered as an usher at St. Bede the Venerable Parish in La Canada Flintridge. His wife of 67 years, Harriet, preceded him in death six months earlier. They are back together again.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, March 28 at St. Bede Church, La Canada Flintridge.
