Jane’s Cake moving to La Cañada

After 32 years selling baking supplies in Montrose, Jane’s Cake and Candy Supply is coming to La Cañada Flintridge.

Jane’s owner, Tom Samaha, said he hopes to have a lease finalized with the Vons shopping center, Plaza de La Cañada, on Foothill Boulevard by the end of the week, with a goal of moving into the breezeway behind Zeli Coffee by early September.

Vons spokesman Carlos Ellingway said it is company policy not to comment on any business deals until they are finalized.

Samaha, who purchased the store two years ago, said that the business was just outgrowing its space as he moved to stock more of the supplies needed for the chefs and bakers.

“We’re going to expand into more of the culinary tools, the bakeware, kitchenware, some small kitchen electrics, so that spot [in La Cañada] will double our size,” said Samaha. “We’re busting out the seams and need to add more stuff and I don’t have any room to add it.”

Samaha said that bringing his shop to La Cañada Flintridge made sense, as he lives in the city and still practices law here full time in addition to running the shop.

“What we’re looking to do is kind of bring the best of the Sur la Table, and Williams Sonoma and Surfas to La Cañada,” he said.

Citing the store’s stock of do-it-yourself cooking and baking supplies as a reason why he’s able to expand despite the recession, Samaha said he looked forward to growing Jane’s business even more.

“I bought the shop because it’s my hobby, it’s fun, I enjoy doing it,” said Samaha. “Ideally, what I hope to do is to grow the shop and work my way out of practicing law and do this full time.”
