Buzz-a-thon at La Cañada salon Sunday to raise funds for two causes

Bruce Smith, owner of La Cañada’s Bruce K. Smith Salon will be giving buzz-cuts for good causes at his shop on Sunday, Aug. 7.

During the 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Buzz-a-thon,” Smith and his stylists will be offering buzz cuts for $20 with the proceeds going to support the Katherine Elizabeth Evans Scholarship Fund and St. Francis Athletic Department.

Named for the 14-year-old San Marino resident who collapsed and later died at an 8th grade graduation party on June 12th, the Katherine Evans Scholarship Fund will help support a student from Katherine’s alma mater, Holy Family. Katherine was planning to attend Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy this fall.

Smith said that Katherine’s father, Greg Evans, is a longtime friend and client, and so when he heard about the establishment of the scholarship fund, he knew he wanted to do something to help.

“The idea was to get a mass amount of people quick,” said Smith. “When you do cut-a-thons it’s really hard to get people, you got to really set it up, maybe you do that a few months ahead of time, and I did this rather quickly. “

Smith said that with two nephews on the St. Francis football team, he found out that the players were required to have their heads buzzed by Aug. 15 and saw the potential for the event. He said that the frosh-soph, junior varsity and varsity teams will all be participating, and that the coaching staff is on board.

“They were the catalyst behind it for me to be able to do it, and that’s why I’m donating half the money to them,” said Smith. “They’re really making it happen, and I wanted to get some money started in her scholarship, in [Katherine’s] name.”

Smith said that ultimately, the buzz-a-thon was his way of reaching out to his friend after the tragic accident.

“There’s nothing you can say,” said Smith. “ I felt like, I can do something that will honor their daughter’s name, so that’s what I did.”
