Crime blotter, March 8: Homeowner fires warning shot in air during attempted burglary

Area 1

3100 block of Brookhill Street: A book of matches, a pair of white headphones and a Motorola Bluetooth headset were stolen from an unlocked Honda Accord’s glove compartment sometime between 11 p.m. on Friday, March 2 and 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 3. The total value of the stolen items was reported as $110.25.

4600 block of La Crescenta Avenue: The rear driver’s-side window of an Acura sedan was smashed with an unknown object sometime between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. During the same time, the driver’s-side middle and rear windows of a Chevy Astro Van parked on the same block were smashed.

3000 block of Santa Carlotta Street: A black plastic envelope containing vehicle registration and proof of insurance were stolen out of an unlocked Subaru Outback sometime between 4 p.m. on Friday, March 2, and 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, March 3.

Area 2

600 block of Starlight Crest Drive: A homeowner discovered the latch of his garage door had been bent inward and the door frame contained marks as if the door had been subject to an attempt to pry it open in what was reported as an attempted burglary. The attempt took place sometime between 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. The door was locked with a deadbolt and remained secure.

1900 block of Foothill Boulevard: A car stereo, a pair of binoculars and two woman’s jackets were stolen from a locked Honda Civic sometime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. The frame above the passenger-side door was pried out of place. The car’s battery was also disconnected from the engine, but left in place.

1400 block of Foothill Boulevard: A red cast-iron fire hydrant was stolen from its normal location affixed to the La Cañada Pet Clinic business sign sometime between 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29, and 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 1.

Area 3

800 block of Flintridge Avenue: A homeowner stopped an attempted burglary at 2:10 a.m. on Friday, March 2. During the night, the victim was awakened by a motion detector alarm installed on the second story outside balcony through which the home had been entered during a previous burglary. Armed with a legally owned handgun, the homeowner went outside and encountered a Latino male, approximately 20 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds. After the victim made eye contact with the man, said “Get out of here” and fired a warning shot in the air, the would-be burglar ran out of the backyard.
