La Cañada tennis knocked out of playoffs in quarterfinals

The La Cañada High tennis team had two battles to deal with Monday in its CIF Southern Section Division II quarterfinal match.

It was bad enough that the Spartans had to take on No. 2 seed Palm Desert on the road. But they also had to deal with oppressive temperatures that topped out at 108 degrees.

It all proved to me too much for La Cañada, which saw its season come to an end with an 18-0 loss.

The Spartans (13-3) advanced to the playoffs after finishing second in the Rio Hondo League. They then notched postseason wins against Golden Valley (16-2) and Crean Lutheran (11-7).

Palm Desert (18-1) moves on to the semifinals. The Aztecs — the Desert Valley champions — have won two straight Division II championships.
