La Cañada School Board looks set for remake

With three seats opening on the La Cañada school board this year, two of the incumbents have said they will not seek reelection while a third is still weighing his options.

La Cañada Unified school board members Scott Tracy and Susan Boyd have announced that they will not seek reelection in November, while board member Joel Peterson is undecided.

Tracy joined the school board 12 years ago and is the current president. He said in an email on Tuesday that he will not seek reelection.

Boyd, a member of the board for eight years, said that she thinks it’s important for members to have children currently enrolled in the district so they have a stronger connection to the issues on hand. Her youngest child graduated last year.

“I decided to step down and let someone else step up,” she said.

Peterson said that while many people have encouraged him to seek reelection, he is currently undecided. Members of the community want him to run to keep those who have “experience and expertise” on the five-member board, he said. Peterson is currently serving his second four-year term.

“I want to make a decision for all the right reasons,” he added.

The filing period for the Nov. 5 election opened on Monday, but as of Wednesday afternoon, only one candidate had started the paperwork to run for a seat on the board.

David Sagal, who pulled nomination papers from the county registrar’s office, is an executive and attorney for Warner Brothers, said he has three children — two of whom are enrolled in the school district.

Sagal is active in the community; he volunteers with the Boy Scouts and plays in a jazz quintet called Big Band that performs at the annual Music in the Park series. He is also of the board of the Verdugo Hills Hospital.

He has lived with his family in La Cañada Flintridge since 2003.

“We really think the schools are an important part of the community and I think I can do a good job,” Sagal said.

Candidates have until Aug. 9 to file their nomination papers.
